I Hope Everyone Has An Uncle Cliff!

Standard

I hope everyone has an “Uncle Cliff.” My Uncle Cliff is 99 years old and a storyteller. His memory is still sharp and he can recall experiences from World War II to current baseball statistics. Every time we visit him, I am reminded that he has more stories we need to hear.

I am thankful that he has recorded over 158 stories in a binder that he keeps close to his side. The stories are pulled out to bless visitors and I love to read Uncle Cliff’s stories out loud to him. I even shared two of Uncle Cliff’s stories with our younger son when he graduated from college. The stories warned that a “young engineer’s” degree doesn’t mean much if he doesn’t care about the people he supervises. Of course, Uncle Cliff said it much better than I ever could have: life experiences were interspersed with humor to make the lessons stick.

Since we live out-of-state, we only see Uncle Cliff twice in a good year. What always touches my heart is that Uncle Cliff remembers our stories. The first thing Uncle Cliff does is to grasp my hand and ask, “How many years has it been now?” He always knows the answer and then follows up with, “How are you doing?” Uncle Cliff never stopped celebrating the fact that I am a cancer survivor.

I like to think that as we held each other’s hands tightly, strength was flowing between us: the wiser to the younger and the younger to the older. In reality, it was Uncle Cliff’s strength of spirit that infused me. I tend to think Uncle Cliff will be with us forever. We don’t want to let go of a man that can still captivate us with his words.

But Uncle Cliff is not doing well. His body is worn out. At age 99 with failing health, I know there aren’t many stories left in him. I am comforted that his last story will be his very best story: the glory of heaven. Someday, our stories will merge and become one for all of eternity. Through faith in Jesus Christ, our lives have the same ending. Only God could write such a beautiful story!

Prologue: This post was written after we visited Uncle Cliff for the last time. He experienced heaven’s story firsthand in late October.

John 17:24

Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

1 Corinthians 2:9

However, it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.”

  1. You were so blessed to have Uncle Cliff! What a long, rich, full life he had. I didn’t see the ending coming and it brought a tear. I know exactly what his first words will be to you when you meet again: “How long has it been?”

  2. Uncle Cliff sounds like Ron’s father Debbie, he was also a very gifted man with words and even had Books published, Ron is the same and he is also a gifted Speaker, his dad died in his Nineties too and we still miss his sharing, although like your Uncle Cliff he was suffering in the end so we have peace knowing he no longer does and no doubt you feel the same.

God tells us as we age our grey hair shows we have life wisdom and if we ask we receive His wisdom and empowering too.

When we read 1 Corinthians 2:9-16 in context Debbie and with other Scriptures as confirmed below we see a wonderful Truth that we need to accept and give Thanks to God for, yes we Ask, Seek and Knock….

1 Corinthians 2:9-16 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that Love Him………….

But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God………………

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth but which the Holy Ghost teacheth, comparing spiritual things with Spiritual. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are Spiritually discerned. But he that is Spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the Mind of the Lord, that he may instruct Him? but we have the Mind of Christ. KJV

John 15:14-15 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.(KJV)

Matthew 10:26-28 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in Light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops (KJV)

Isaiah 55:3 Incline your ear and come unto me: hear and your soul shall live.

We know that heaven’s glory to come is far better than anything we can imagine right now!

      • Than why don’t you find out Debbie why WordPress Staff are playing with your settings instead of just letting it continue? and why haven’t you deleted my comments that were to you personally.

I care very much for you Debbie and believe you are seeking God with all your heart but it would be beneficial if you believed what God tells us in Scripture instead of what you think or have been taught in error. If Jesus indwells us and we have His mind, we will know what He knows.

1 Corinthians 2:9-16 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that Love Him………….BUT GOD HAS REVEALED THEM UNTO US BY HIS SPIRIT.

John 15:14-15 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.(KJV)

Galatians 2: 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the Faith of the Son of God, who Loved me, and gave Himself for me.(KJV)

Ephesians 3:16-18 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in Love, May be able to comprehend with all Saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;(KJV)

Do you know Debbie what our vile Bodies are going to be like? God tells us in Scripture.

        Blessings – Anne.

  4. Uncle cliff sounds awesome – and we do not have anything even close to uncle cliff – ha! But how cool that u value him Debbie – I believe the bible says that the day of death is appointed and so I think it is interesting when some folks get a century – well I hope he makes it to 100! And I wonder who will be on his welcome team when he gets to heaven! Cos you know he will be on yours when your time comes –
Anyhow – did you hear the joke about the college student who told her grandmother that she wanted to be an engineer? Her grandmother asked “now why do you want work on a train!??”
Holy u Have a good day Debbie

    • Unfortunately, Uncle Cliff passed away in late October. He was ready to go home and to see his loved ones that had been waiting for him in heaven!

In the old days, we used to think of engineers as the ones that drove the trains. Now there are so many different types of engineering degrees. Saying an engineer isn’t specific enough!

      • Yes I know they ought that in the old days – that is the essence of the joke! And so I guess I was really late to read this and I bet cliff had a great welcome team upon his arrival – and wonder what kind of mansion he has – or maybe no ma soon at all – maybe a free flowing place beyond the streets of gold and on some beautiful cliff – 💛♥️❤️

          • Annie, I am really confused. Your comment (about Ron’s dad with Scriptures is right after Kathryne’s comment) where it has been since the week I published this particular post. I also confirmed this by checking my blog post when I was not logged into WordPress. In the e-mail that I sent you which you did not receive, I told you that I deleted the 2 short comments related to your WordPress troubles. I am sorry that you can’t see your comment, but it is there. Just for reference, I have not seen a comment from you on my most recent post, “Light the Way.” (I know that you like to comment on every post.) Praying that your Christmas season is beautiful as we focus on the Christ child!

          • Annie, I don’t know. I don’t have a good answer for you. I did take the time to re-read your comment and Scriptures and reply again right before this comment. (I probably said something different from the first time!) You know that I appreciate your sharing of Scripture.

I also retrieved your first two comments and posted them again even though they don’t relate to the subject of this post.

          • Since my original reply to your first comment was associated with that comment, it was also deleted when I deleted your duplicate comment. (Remember, you posted the same comment more than once because my blog moderated your comment.) I believe everything is restored and accounted for now. I apologize for the mix-up on my part.

Can we move on now and change gears to talk about our favorite subject: Jesus Christ! That is much more edifying than the technology drawbacks and messes we encounter. Thanks Dear Annie!

As I get closer to my operation I am writing more and more and not going to others. I apologize for not visiting and reading your post sooner. This post is so wonderful I think in some way we all had an Uncle Cliff. Sometime they may not live as long. I had a favourite that passed away last September, Uncle Barrie he was 81 he was a great adventurer and one of the last of the Australian Bushies

    • Barb… I agree with you, we all can relate to an Uncle Cliff or Uncle Barrie. I hope that some day, we will be that Aunt that people look up to for wisdom, faith, and love! For me, writing is the process for healing. So, I can understand why you are writing and writing before your surgery. I have to admit that I have a hard time keeping up with your blog and the number of posts, especially this time of the year.
