Am I Really Getting Old(er)?

I did not hit a milestone birthday this year. However, I am constantly reminded that I am smack dab in the middle of middle age. Below is a list of signs that confirm I am getting old(er).

  1. As requested, I presented my driver’s license to the clerk. She examined the picture and commented, “You don’t look like your driver’s license at all.” Then pause and no further comment.

2. While grocery shopping, I passed a little old white-haired lady wearing the same shirt that I own.

3. A neighbor on our street introduced herself and commented, “At our age…” I figured she was in the decade ahead of me.

4. This one came from a friend; My friend’s granddaughter was playing with the Fisher Price Little People family. The two year old picked up the figurine of the white-haired lady with a tight-bun hairstyle and declared, “Grandma.” My friend corrected her granddaughter, “That’s old grandma, not me.”

Thinking about getting older prompted me to discover what God has to say about aging. Gray-haired, white-haired or in-between, we are loved by our God who honors age and years walked out with Him.

  1. We never get too old to serve God.

Joshua 14:10-11 

“Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the desert.  So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.

  1. God does not abandon or forsake us as we get older.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. 

  1. God keeps us young at heart with fresh revelation of Him and His ways.

Psalm 103:5

who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

  1. Our influence and our witness for God were not intended to fade as we age. We will always have purpose.

Psalm 92:14

They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green,

  1. The blessings continue to pile up with an extra special blessing in later life: grandchildren.

Ruth 4:15

He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age.  For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.

They say Debbie your as old as you feel and at times for me that has been 108, the Children use to call me Aunty Anne but they now call me Grannie Annie and nobody asks to see my Seniors Card anymore, they believe me! Hmmmm yes even my grey hair agrees I’m no spring chicken and the candles on my Birthday cake don’t fit anymore, they keep falling off but as you shared and it is confirmed in Scripture, we are not past our use by date when we are in Christ Jesus regardless of our age in years.

    God also tells us our gray hair shows we have life wisdom but we can ask for His wisdom at any age and this does not wear out even if our bodies do.

    I created a Power point Debbie about growing older (see link below) after receiving one that was putting the elderly down, I admit I know very little about Technology or modem gadgets like the younger generation do, including Mobiles that take pictures and can be used for the Internet but I know a lot about life and with asking for and receiving God’s wisdom His Truth too, am I bragging No! it’s His wisdom not mine that I share now as my past mistakes and fleshy understanding during my younger years confirm, in those years I had no Eternal Hope, I do now.

    Thank you Debbie and the wonderful gift that you have to express your agreement with God’s Truth by using everyday happenings in your life will never wear out either, what you share today will bear good fruit now and in years to come.

    • Annie… I am happy to see that your longer comments are not getting shut out by WordPress! Yeah. I have to admit that Grannie Annie has more of a ring than Aunty Anne. Either way, thank God that we are precious to God irregardless of our age.

      I checked out your Power Point and left a comment there. You gave lots of reminders of how we “age” in Christ. As far as your very last comment (paragraph), perhaps I need to nod toward you. The question is, who is older, you or I?! 🙂
