I enjoy the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) of Michigan for the slower pace of life, the natural beauty and the friendliness of the people with a Yooper accent. The locals lovingly refer to their U.P. as “God’s Country.”
On the way to our destination in God’s Country, we passed a stretch of road dotted with houses bordering the rugged beauty of Lake Superior. You can’t see the homes, but their locations are marked with signs that identify their little piece of heaven here on earth.
The names have always caught my attention. Names that describe what they expect to do: Rancho Relaxo, No Rest Here II. Names of who they hope to see: Papa’s Camp, The Shores of Maggie Mae, Ruth’s Land. Names of what they look forward to: Foote Rest, Superior Times. Names that make their little piece of heaven feel like home. Superior Hut, End of Track. Names that try to capture the allure: Superior Reflections, Lake Superior Shangri-La. Names for its natural beauty: Thistle Dew, Loon Call Cove.
What would you name your little piece of heaven here on earth? As believers in Jesus Christ, one day we will experience the heaven God has prepared for us. If God were to put up signs marking heaven, I believe that He would name it for what can not be found there: No Sin, No Pain, No Illness, No Death, No Sorrow, No Harm, No Tears and No Evil. A simple description that fulfills the longing of our hearts for eternity. But wait, there is one more name I can think of for heaven: Promise Kept!
I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.

Promise kept! What a great name! I’m from Michigan, and have always loved the UP–what Michigander talk! We lived many years in Colorado too, and when we would drive up into the mountains, so many of the cottages and homes along the rivers had these kind of names. I’ve always wanted to name our home, but can’t seem to come up with a good one! But I absolutely love your correlation between our bit of heaven here on earth and our future home in the land of Promise Kept!!
Sheila, Thanks for stopping by. The names (and the beautiful settings for the homes) have always stirred my imagination! We can even tag on “for Debbie” and for “Sheila” as in “Promise Kept for Sheila!” For November, all my posts will be about U.P. memories! 🙂
Looking forward to them!!
Ok, this is funny…I read your post and stopped to comment, but was distracted by the comment above, from another Sheila. I too lived in Michigan and Colorado…small world! And yes, the promise is real, kept, sure, true! ~ Sheila
Sheila, Our very big God makes this world very small with all the connections we have to each other! BTW: The two Sheila’s here are the only Sheila’s I “know” and considering that you both lived in the same states and commented on this blog… What are the odds of that?! 🙂
Promise Kept, I like that name. It is indeed everything our heart has longed for in Jesus name. The world can be cruel, merciless, judgmental, painful, difficult but somehow we made it through because of God’s love both from heaven and on Earth through his children. Heaven is place where God’s words are lived by men and women, and that can be a heaven on earth. I believe with faith & prayers, we can have our bliss here. God bless.
Island Traveler, I agree… a foretaste of heaven on earth is truly bliss!
The Kingdom of God Debbie is in our hearts Spiritually on Earth and the reality of it will be in Heaven, we enter in now but experience the fullness of the Promise Kept when we are in our Heavenly dwelling, a Mansion prepared for us and adorned with our Spiritual Treasures.
Luke 17:20-21 And when He was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, He answered them and said, The Kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the Kingdom of God is within you.
Matthew 6:19 -21 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal But lay up for yourselves Treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal For where your Treasure is, there will your heart be also.
My name for Heaven is ” Fulfillment ” yes a Promise Kept!

Anne, What a gracious God we have to give us heaven on earth in our hearts, i.e., fellowship with Him!
